Iperf IP measurement tool

IP test tool: Iperf

Please do not use this tool unless asked to do so, as we need to book manual engineer tests.

Please download the Iperf software for Windows, and extract it to your hard disk drive.

The Iperf tool (K-perf/J-Perf) requires Java; you can get Java from http://www.java.com/ (Please ensure Java in installed before continuing)

:: What is it? ::
Iperf monitors IP packets between two nodes and measures the results. You will run Iperf in 'server' mode on a computer on your network, and we will run the client on our engineer's computer.
Note:If you are using NAT you will need to port forward ("Virtual Server") TCP port 5001 from your ADSL router to the machine on your LAN you're running iperf on as our engineer needs to connect back to that port to test your upload speed. You also need to make sure your firewall allows incoming connections to tcp port 5001 on the machine you run iperf on. Let us know if you need help configuring this.

:: Running the test ::
Note:
To ensure accurate readings please disconnect all other equipment (servers, computers, VoIP systems, IP cameras, etc.) that may otherwise attract or send IP packets; once the test is complete you may reconnect. We will agree with you in advance a time window during which we will run the tests.

(Windows may generate a security alert asking for your permission to 'unblock' this application; you'll need to 'unblock' it to perform the test.)

1. Double-click into the extracted folder to find the file "iperf.bat", and double-click it.

2. When "Jperf" loads up select "Server" and click the "run" button

3. Iperf is now listening for commands from our engineer. Providing that your broadband router is forwarding TCP/IP packets on port 5001 over to your PC, and that your PC's firewall has TCP port 5001 open, then our engineer should be able to run the tests.

:: What next? ::
We will reply to you with our tests as soon as possible. We may be able to solve things from our side, offer a solution to implement on your side, or we may even request further information.
