SmarterMail - configuration of service
(You must have been issued a service that comes with domain Admin rights)
Initial login and populating of existing users/email-addresses
- Obtain a temporary login address from Support (usually http://mail.iseu.co.uk:9998/)
- Enter you Admin username/password
- To add existing users to this new instance of SmarterMail go to: Settings > Domain Settings > Users
- It is important that you create a certificate so that any email sent from the SmarterMail server is signed, thus ensuring that the remote mail server can trust the email being sent:
- Go to Settings > Domain Settings > Advanced Settings > DomainKeys
- Click the "Generate Key" tab
- Enter "SmarterMail" as the "Selector" and click "Generate Key"
- The "TXT Record Name" is the DNS record that you will now need to add to the DNZ zone for your domain. Record type is TXT (text). Please contact us if you rquire any assistance to do this. Your domain may well be hosted with another provider; SmarterMail is designed to work as a seperate service, but the DNS settings must be correct!
- The "TXT Record Value" is the value that you need to enter for the record in the DNS zone (above). Copy and Paste this value.
Configuration of DNS zone
- Login to your domain's DNS zone editor; your provider who hosts your domain is responsible for advising how to do this. If we host your domain, then please contact us for clear and simple advice.
- Host (A) record: add a new 'A' record (hostname record) called "mail"
- IP address: Please obtain an IP address from us, eg.213.133.152.2
- Mail Exchanger (MX) record: add (or replace) your MX record mail.yourdomain.com. (replace with your actual domain name!) - note the dot (.) at the end of the domain name
- In your DNZ zone editor the "name" of this record is usually "@" (or in some editors, left blank)
- Ensure that the "Record Preference" (mail priority) value is "1"; you can have several MX records for a domain and "1" means that remote servers will attempt to send mail to this server first before contacting any other servers
- Domain Key certificate: add the hostname and value from SmarterMail (see steps above)
- SPF record: add an appropriate SPF record for your domain (this is vital for modern anti-spam configuration)
- For example: "v=spf1 a mx a:mail.yourdomain.com mx:mail.yourdomain.com ~all"
- In your DNZ zone editor the "name" of this record is usually "@" (or in some editors, left blank)
- Record type is TXT (text)
- See http://old.openspf.org/wizard.html?mydomain=yourdomain.com for more help with setting up an SPF record

- Your users can access the webmail system at http://mail.yourdomain.com:9998/

- Outgoing server requires authentication? Yes (username/password same as for incoming server)
